Welcome to Piece and Play with Jean and Barbara at The Stitchin’ Post in Sisters, OR. www.stitchinpost.com
As most of you know I am the co-owner of The Stitchin’ Post along with my daughter Valori, who is a textile designer for Robert Kaufman fabrics. We will be celebrating our 40th year in business in 2015, which is hard to believe. I have the honor this year of writing six articles for Piece and Play which is very fun for me as I love being involved teaching new techniques and seeing what students do with them. Hopefully you will send me photos of your projects – jean@stitchinpost.com.
The Four Patch pillow in this article was very fun to piece. Once I choose the fabrics that I think will work and get them cut into strips I can hardly wait to start putting combinations together. There are always surprises, like how much the bright true orange really makes the other fabrics sing. I always try to find a fabric that is a bit of a maverick. If you are interested in a kit for this project we have it on our web site:
Any orders placed will be the stated price of the item plus shipping and handling.
*Piece and Play Four Patch Pillow Kit $26 (does not include the pillow form)
Jean’s Palette Pac ¼ yd each of 22 solids plus 1 yd of theme print $65
Each article will feature a pincushion, which I create out of scraps. I always have a stash of these ready to give as gifts as pincushions or paperweights. If you can’t find crushed walnut shells to fill them with let us send you some:
*Crushed Walnut Shells $3.50
Let me introduce you to my quilting friend, Barbara Ferguson, who will be creating the assignments in her very own palette of fabrics. As you can see from her inspiration picture and palette of fabric that she has a wide range of fabrics to work with. I like the linen textured fabrics that she included.
*Barbara’s palette pack $48 (17 fat quarters)
“From Barbara -- I came across a card with the artwork of Sarah Angst and was drawn to the rich, autumn palate. Using the card as inspiration, I pulled fabric in the various color families and included several values in each color, so I would have lots to play with!
For her pillow she chose to work with the colors of fall and to add a bit of interest with the light and dark grey chambray like linen. Then the taupe color border frames the work.
In the pincushion notice the color combination featuring some of the other colors in her pallet. There is always a surprise in store when you “just play around” with fabric combinations.
Barbara’s Four Patch Pillow kit $26 (dose not include pillow form)
If you use Instagram or Pintrest or any other form of Social Media, and you will be making your very own Four Patch Pillows or pincushions hastage your photos with #APQLearnalong and @Stitchinpost so we can see what you all are doing!
