The Alchemy of Fabric Club- March 2017 Edition:
Alchemy by definition is a magical process of transformation, creation or combination of two elements in an attempt to turn them “into gold”. This definition rings so true with the creative process involved in quilt making. Through the years I have taught thousands of students and worked with them in choosing colors to use in their projects.
Working with students in my Intuitive Color and Design class is one of my favorite tasks. We start our assignments with solid fabrics so the print personality does not dominate the decisions that need to be made. We are working with pure color.
This runner or wall hanging was an experiment focusing on spring green but thinking about wildflowers that pop up in the meadow. There are several shades of green as well as aqua and teal which all come from mixtures of blue and yellow. Having that in common makes it easy for them to play together in a composition. (These are analogous colors on the color wheel, neighbors.) But I felt the red family needed to be represented so there are small bits of that but what really makes the colors sing are the small bits of pastel pink. Who would have thought they could do so much work in this piece.
The 5 ½” wide strip rolls of solids are a great way to build a library of solid colors to play with.
The Pantone 2017 Color of the Year is Greenery which I believe is a perfect choice as Leatrice Eiseman says it "[satisfies] our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature".
Our intention for creating the "Alchemy of Fabric" club is to provide the spark... the catalyst... the inspiration... for a project that your color palette is built upon. We have a monthly tutorial of insights on each fabric chosen. We have also included 10 other recommended fabrics to expand from the core fabrics and further guide your choices.
We are excited to share this educational opportunity as a study in color and fabric as well as build your artist palette of fabrics. As you practice designing your project from many different designers and collections our hope is to facilitate greater confidence and empowerment in your creative pursuits..
At the Stitchin' Post were are committed to creativity and inspiration and we are now embarking on a journey opening to new options together as the "Alchemy of Fabric" unfolds each month. Please share with us what the spark has ignited in you using the hashtag "#AlchemyofFabric" on your preferred social media platform, so others can be inspired by your work! You can also search #AlchemyofFabric to see what others have done, and to gain your own inspiration.
